2018 YA & Junior Releases I Can’t Wait For

When I was a teenager and read a lot of classics, I never knew the agony/joy of anticipating a new release because all my favourite authors lived decades or centuries ago. But since falling in love with YA and junior fiction and becoming a fangirl of a handful of contemporary authors, all that has changed. I restricted myself to listing only 2018 releases. Here are my highest anticipated releases in chronological order!

If you’ve read Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda or seen the movie Love, Simon, you’re probably just as excited as I am to spend more time with these amazing characters. I can’t wait to read a book from Leah’s perspective because I thought that for a secondary character she was surprisingly deep in the first book. Something I’ve come to expect from Becky Albertalli is enormous heart, accurate descriptions of teenagerhood, and bountiful diversity.

From Twinkle, with Love

AUTHOR: Sandhya Menon
PUBLISHER: Simon Pulse
RELEASE DATE
: May 22, 2018
GENRE
: Contemporary Young Adult Fiction

From Twinkle, with Love is the second book by the author of When Dimple Met Rishi. I really appreciate that Sandhya Menon writes about girls following their passions in male-dominated industries. I’m also intrigued by how the book is apparently made up of Twinkle’s letters to female directors. I anticipate this will be a real fun romp with some important messages slipped in for good measure.

My Plain Jane

AUTHORS: Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton & Jodi Meadows
SERIES
: The Lady Janies #2
PUBLISHER: HarperTeen
RELEASE DATE
: June 26, 2018
GENRE
: Young Adult Historical Fantasy, Paranormal
PAGE COUNT

My Lady Jane was weird and fun so I’m totally onboard for the next instalment of The Lady Janies series. The fact that this book is based on Jane Eyre is the cherry on top. I’m looking forward to seeing how the authors rework the characters and plot to create something new and modern. I also seriously hope they continue with the feminist themes (not least of all because the original classic contains a lot of period-specific problematic ideas).

You Don’t Know Everything, Jilly P!

AUTHOR: Alex Gino
PUBLISHER: Scholastic Press
RELEASE DATE
: September 25, 2018
GENRE
: Middle Grade Fiction
PAGE COUNT
: 256

You might remember Alex Gino from the middle grade book Georgefeaturing a transgender child. I remember being blown away by the simple sincerity and sweetness of George. Alex Gino is committed to writing representations of diversity that junior readers can understand and learn from. You Don’t Know Everything, Jilly P! promises to be another moving, heartfelt read.

Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow

AUTHOR: Jessica Townsend
SERIES
: Nevermoor #2
PUBLISHER: Hachette
RELEASE DATE
: October, 2018
GENRE
: Middle Grade Fantasy

The first book in the series, Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow, was such a pleasant surprise and rocketed onto my list of favourites. I can’t wait to see leading girl Morrigan grow as a person even more in the sequel. It’s obvious that her story is only just beginning.

The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy

AUTHOR: Mackenzi Lee
SERIES
: Guide #2
PUBLISHER: Katherine Tegen Books
RELEASE DATE
: October 2, 2018
GENRE
: Young Adult Historical Fiction, Adventure
PAGE COUNT
: 512

Another pleasant surprise, I was hooked on Mackenzi Lee’s characters and writing style from the first page of The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. Although I’m sad to lose Monty as our narrator, his sister Felicity was a strong character that I’ll enjoy learning more about. I’m starting to broaden my taste and read more swashbuckling adventures, of which this is a prime example.

What If It’s Us

AUTHORS: Becky Albertalli & Adam Silvera
PUBLISHER: HarperTeen
RELEASE DATE
: October 9, 2018
GENRE
: Contemporary Young Adult Fiction
PAGE COUNT
: 448

Can there be anything more brilliant than a collaboration between Becky Albertalli (Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda) and Adam Silvera (More Happy Than Not)? If think not. Actually, I’m terrified to read What If It’s Us because I bet it’s going to hit me hard with the feels. I’ve never escaped unscathed from one of these authors’ novels.

What are your highest anticipated 2018 releases? Are they sequels you can’t wait to get your hands on or new standalones from authors you love?
